The Runners, an 18-foot high and 40-feet long stainless steel sculpture designed by Greek sculptor Dr. Theodoros Papagiannis, welcomes over 100 million visitors to the city each year from its site outside the International Terminal just south of I-190. A gift from the Chicago Athens Sister City Committee and supported by Chicago’s large Greek-American community, the work depicts five runners emerging from antiquity into the modern world.
The project was in the planning and fundraising stage for seven years. CG|LS worked with all the parties from July through October, 2009, negotiating the donation agreement and reviewing the construction documents. Chris Gent also sited the sculpture in front of the International Terminal and oversaw the fabrication and installation of the sculpture.
